DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
“Beyond Measure started as a simple, funny idea — what if someone just... started shrinking?
But the more I sat with it, the more it became about things I wasn't expecting to explore: mortality, the slow loss of control over your own body, and the quiet heroism of adapting rather than despairing.
I wanted to make something handmade and intimate. Something that felt like it was drawn with care, not manufactured at scale.
If it makes you laugh and then catches you off guard with a feeling you didn't see coming — that's exactly what I was going for.”
— David Ferrier
"I wanted to make something that felt like it was drawn at a kitchen table but dreamed on a cinema screen. The shrinking is absurd, but the fear underneath it is something everyone knows."
Beyond Measure is an award-winning short film by writer & director David Ferrier.
David Ferrier is an Australia-based writer, cartoonist, and director whose work has appeared in The New Yorker and McSweeney's. His distinctive hand-drawn style carries a warmth and wit that feels both intimate and cinematic.
Beyond Measure is his debut short film — a handmade, quietly ambitious project that blends craft and polish in equal measure. David's artistic vision centres on the things we rarely say aloud: mortality, the slow loss of control over our own bodies, and the quiet courage it takes to adapt. Rather than treating these themes heavily, he approaches them with playfulness — finding the funny and the heartbreaking in the same breath.
